EVENT HISTORY

The Charity Room has come a long way to become what it is today. Every member has a history of raising funds through numerous charity groups, and each decided to combine their efforts into one place here years ago. Below, you'll find a brief history of how The Charity Room came to be.

2016

With a crew mostly composed of members from the gaming commentary group 'Find the Computer Room', one of us asked, "Wouldn't it be funny if we made a fundraising group called 'Fund the Charity Room'?" And well... here we are. Raising money for the Dreamscape Foundation, our self-titled first event had zero theme and many growing pains, as we soon discovered how much really goes into making a week-long broadcasted event; however, Fund the Charity Room put their heads together to more than triple their performance the following year!

2017

Nine months of planning for nine straight days of platforming games, Fund the Charity Room pulled out all the stops to raise money for the International Rescue Committee by challenging each other in head-to-head races, creating a bid-war tally system, and adding in raffle prizes to boot! As our second-most successful fundraiser, 'Platformania' became the standard that FTCR based all future events on.

After Hurricane Maria's devastating hit in the Caribbean, two of our members scrounged up a last-minute event to raise money for Puerto Rico's recovery through UNICEF. Smoovies and Ted joined forces to... un-join forces in a 12-hour race through the entirety of Super Mario Galaxy! Having reached their $1,200 goal, and being close to Halloween, Smoovies endured another long 10 hours to beat 'Alien: Isolation' on it's disturbingly hard Nightmare difficulty!

To raise some Christmas cheer, and to play the latest installment from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, FTA dedicated an evening to beat 'Sonic Forces' to raise Christmas gift donations for his local Children's hospital, Nationwide Children's.

With the majority of the crew juggling multiple projects during 2018, Fund the Charity Room temporarily scaled back for the year to release a special one-day event titled 'Sonic Zeroes'! Four team members including SomecallmeJohnny, Exandshadow, FTA, and gamesEnlisted raced side-by-side through the GameCube classic 'Sonic Heroes', but with a twist - the more money they raised, the more chapters / teams they would play!

2019

An entire nine-day fundraising marathon dedicated to playing low quality licensed games based on completely random franchises? We can't sink any lower! Returning to raise money for the International Rescue Comittee, Fund the Charity Room explored the highs and lows of licensed games with 'License to Chill'!

To help people smile during the ever-so-special year that was 2020, SomecallmeJohnny, Smoovies, gamesEnlisted, and GoodKingLinky banded together to bring us the mouthful of a title 'Sonic Adventure 1 Battle XD' to raise money for Direct Relief. From all across the east coast, the group came together online to race through the entirety of 'Sonic Adventure'.

With several members of Fund the Charity Room having loved ones who are either currently suffering or were recently lost due to type 1 and 2 diabetes, the group came together in 2020 to give their very best effort for the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation. Choosing games that star characters who make up the roster for the infamous 'Super Smash Bros' series, FTCR strategically balanced a schedule filled to brim with fan-favorite hits and cult classics with the aptly named 'Subpar Smash Bros' to create their most successful event so far!

Who's hungry? To wrap up the year, gamesEnlisted, Qatherine, and their friend Olivia use their wits to see who can rank up the best farmer score in Viva Piñata! Over the course of 12 hours, they dug up every techniques they could to raise money for Direct Action for Farmworkers with 'Piñata Party Panic'!

The Charity Room

Rebranding

'Fund the Charity Room' was a reference to 'Find the Computer Room', which was a meme within a niche community on the internet in 2005. Yeah... So to help our team grow, but to help keep things familiar, we decided to #Rebrand to just 'The Charity Room'!

To kick off 'The Charity Room's first event under its rebranded name, Ratchet & Clank expert The Golden Bolt and relative newcomer MykonosFan got together to race and raise money for the American Heart Association as part of 'Race It & Clank: Clock Blockers'. The Golden Bolt played the longer PS2 game he's played over and over and got the win in the end, and MykonosFan competed with its shorter PS4 remake and still lost somehow.

The Charity Room once again came together to give their best effort for the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation with their new marathon 'Super Mario Oddities'! To celebrate Mario's 40th birthday, The Charity Room played and beat a myriad of games from all across the Super Mario franchise.

During the invasion of Ukraine, The Charity Room wanted to do its part in helping displaced civilians affected by these attacks. Ted, Qatherine, and Manda came together to stream a co-op playthrough of Kirby's Return to Dreamland to help raise money for the International Rescue Committee - a charity dedicated to helping refugees in crisis across the world.

The Charity Room came together for a one-day fundraising stream to support the National Network of Abortion Funds, by helping folks "laugh through the pain" with an impromptu stream of Portal 2's co-operative mode and a group session of Gartic Phone.
